I like Red. Here is a close up of a red leaf. Nature made this red naturally. It was my favourite colour as a child. Now I love all colours. All colour is beautiful. I cannot have a favourite colour as an adult. This is because it would be unfair on all the other colours. If I had to choose a colour it would be green. A lime green....

The Woolhope Dome

A shot of my parents cottage and their surrounding land. The land is situated on the world famous 'Woolhope Dome' which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The land is also classed as SSI (site of special scientific interest). Recently a local Naturalist visited the land and told my parents it was the best example of a wild natural grassland on all of the Woolhope Dome. Naturally we were all very pleased...

Featured are a colour and black and white image of my eldest brother Richard. The shot was taken in Sintra, Portugal, in the apartment we hired together so we could attend a close friends wedding. Young Harry, my brother and I went for a walk right on our doorstep this weekend. It was a beautiful warm Spring evening, the birds were singing their hearts out and the lambs seemed to skip with glee. Woolhope really is a beautiful place to live and Harry is very lucky to be growing up in such an area...

Earth Hour - Get Involved

Last Saturday 27th of March 2010 at 8.30pm, some friends and I turned our lights of for an hour. This universal gesture is part of WWF's genius way of raising awareness on climate change. WWF want a billion people around the world to switch off their lights for one hour – WWF’s Earth Hour. The idea is to raise awareness regarding climate change that is affecting our planet. The first Earth Hour was in 2007 in Sydney, Australia where 2.2 million people took part. Since then it has gone global, 50 million people in 2008 and over a billion in 2009. In 2009, 4000 cities in 88 countries took part. The message is clear, climate change is not about the country you are from but the planet you live on....So come on everybody join in, lets try and raise more awareness in the UK.

Barry the Tramp

Introducing Barry the Tramp, who continually travels the length and breath of the country with his bike surviving on the kindness and generosity of the general public. How he survives the winter is anyones guess, but never ever moans about anything - a lesson to us all. He has been visting my parents house for around five years, stopping by roughly every eight to twelve weeks for a bath and a hot dinner (his favourite being Spaghetti Bolognese). Out of the various houses he knocks on to survive it is only my angelic mother who lets him have a regular bath, feed and sends him off with a carrier bag packed with food...

A good three hour walk with a friend on a dedicated 'snow snap sess' brought back some images that are definitely worth the tired legs from trudging through such deep snow. The local scenery on the walk is simply breathtaking, affirming on how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful part of the world.

A shot with my new compact camera the LX3. A feature of a recent firmware upgrade is the ability to shoot in the 1:1 square format. I was very appreciative of the optical image stabiliser/fast lens combination that night in the dark without a tripod after a few celebratory drinks!

The usual Christmas Day Walk found one of the local lakes near me looking it's special best. Snow covered frozen water with an atmospheric mist lingering over the island made a beautiful scene on the popular day. If only I'd got up there earlier as it was getting dark!

The Cats Back

Some friends and I climbed the Cat's Back (Crib-y-Garth) today in pretty icy conditions. It's a rocky sandstone ridge which offers a unique vantage point over a remote part of the English-Welsh border. Being so exposed to the elements atop the rocky ridge makes civilisation feel a million miles away. On a clear day you can see the highest peaks of the Black Mountains, the Malverns, and the Bristol Channel and if you are very lucky, one of my pals dad's farmhouses!

Mountain Mastery

Out in the Brecon Beacons, Wales yesterday in a place called Talybont-on-Usk. The area is jam packed with stunning waterfalls - so many in fact that it is easy to get 'waterfall overload'. We decided to climb a looming nearby mountain which was a nigh on vertical ascent. The leg burn was well worth it though for the combined views and feeling of serenity you are rewarded with. There's nothing like a bit of mountain energy to refresh the soul. Pictured is a friend reaching the summit, tripod in tow. What us photographers will do to obtain that elusive photo!

Fish Walking

Two friends 'fish-walk' the extremely picturesque local River Wye. Fish Walking (a personal term not a technical one) involves walking the banks of the river and casting your rod every so often and enjoying a decent sized walk at the same time. It really is as casual as it sounds. I couldn't see how the lads were going to be successful, but towards the end of the walk one of them managed to pull in a eight pound pike. Much to my surprise... (and equally theirs to I have a feeling)

Double Trouble

Here are two of the six we have caught so far and yes...they are rats and not mice. Living in a country cottage in the middle of nowhere has is cons as well as its pros! Admittedly the pros certainly outweigh. Look closely enough and you can see some of the cheese from the trap still in the mouth of the rat on the left. The poor little blighters.

Here I've managed to catch the Chief Toy Tester in progress for 'Operation Christmas Child.' This was also the night before my brother Alex (pictured) became a dad! Every year my mother makes up around fifteen shoe boxes for underprivileged children in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Every Autumn my 'teetotalist' parents pick a basket of sloes for our annual batch of sloe gin, they prick each sloe by hand around 12 times, add three ounces of sugar, then around four days later add the neat gin. After six months its ready for consumption - needless to say its fairly popular!

Made this image just before the clocks went back, there is a wonderful Acer tree by the back door so I've tried to capture it's amazing colours. It's the best it's ever been this year by a long way.

This two foot long grass snake/roadkill (not adder) made my friend leap when he first saw it on the roadside! We carried it back (well he did after some gentle coaxing from me) to photograph and poured some water over it to clean it up. I stuck my 70mm macro in its face and it suddenly flicked it's tongue then raised it's head in a cobra style fashion! The poor thing was playing dead but sadly died around 15 minutes later.

Went on a 'mushroom walk' on the weekend in which a fellow photographer friend and I covered a measly few miles in five and a half hours; I guess everything's miniaturised when you are shooting macro.

More Kitchen Shallots

Thought I'd pop up a colour version to see the shallots in their true glory. A shallot is in the same family as the onion, except it is formed more like garlic, but with the mild onion flavour. Well done Mrs Taylor!

Took this last night of a recently hauled crop of tasty shallots, whilst shooting my father asked me to guess the supermarket value, which he gave at around eighty pounds (After I jokingly said a hundred pounds!). The kitchen always makes a good picture, so tastefully done by my mother. As does every room in their cottage for that matter. Converted to B&W for that 'country cottage' feel.
